Yorkie The Yorkshire Terrier of today is a very small dog who is primarily a companion dog. The original Yorkie was much bigger than the Yorkshire Terrier we know now. They were used for hunting small rodents and other vermin. It is likely that the Yorkshire was a mixture of other Terriers with a bit of Maltese peppered in; these Terriers include the Skye Terrier, Dandie Dinmont, Manchester Terrier, and the now-extinct Paisley or Clydesdale Terrier. Over the years, this brave little hunting dog became more fashionable as a companion dog; they are so small now that women carry them either in bags or under their arms. The Yorkie was first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885.
